Why choose an Independent Midwife

When you're pregnant, the kind of care you receive matters deeply. You want to feel safe, listened to, and truly supported. You do not want to feel rushed through appointments or made to feel like a number. Many people are not even aware that they have a choice of who cares for them in their pregnancy.

Independent midwives are a growing network of midwives across the UK that have (mostly) previously worked with the NHS in some capacity, and feel restricted with the level of care that they are able to give. Frustrated by the rigidity of the guidelines and hospital protocols that lead to coercion and a feeling of a loss of autonomy in birthing women. Independent midwives are trained in the same way as NHS employed midwives, and regulated by the same regulator- the NMC (The Nursing and Midwifery Council).

At East Anglian Midwives, you are receiving care from two independent midwives. We (Beth and Kirsti) take pride in our shared care approach, where we both build a relationship of trust with you from the beginning of pregnancy all the way through to birth, and then into the postnatal period, supporting you as you adjust to your newborn baby.

By choosing care with East Anglian Midwives as your primary caregivers during pregnancy, you are guaranteed to have the same midwives from booking through to the birth, fostering a trusting relationship and reducing anxiety.

We work alongside you throughout your whole journey, offering calm, consistent, compassionate care tailored entirely to you. Whether you’re planning a home birth, or a hospital birth, are recovering from a previous traumatic experience, or simply want to feel more in control of your care, choosing us as your independent midwives could be the best decision you make in your pregnancy.

Each appointment is a gentle, unhurried space just for you. Made to fit in with your schedule. Taking place in the comfort of your own home and lasting around 1–2 hours, these visits are tailored to your needs, emotionally, physically, and practically.

There’s time to ask questions, talk through your hopes or fears, and explore whatever’s on your mind as you prepare for birth and step into your new role as a parent. You are held, heard, and supported and never rushed. You’ll be supported to make informed decisions with confidence, as you navigate the many options available to you.

One of the things Beth and I enjoy most is tailoring the care to you and your family. We take time to develop a relationship with you, to understand your hopes, your expectations for birth and to calm any anxieties you may hold as you approach birth, or your parenting journey.

One of the beautiful things about choosing care from us is the freedom to birth where you feel safest, including in the comfort of your own home. If your journey takes you to the hospital, we will remain by your side, continuing to offer the same calm, nurturing support, holding space for you and your choices, wherever birth unfolds.

Our personalised care doesn't stop when your baby is born. Through that first week after birth, when you are in a haze of feeds, nappies and broken sleep we are there in an enhanced schedule of visits, or at the end of the phone. We continue care into the 4th week after your baby is born, supporting you as much or as little as you would like, tailoring our care to your requirements. We have been known to visit our families whilst taking a holiday (in the UK), or pet sitting, and we love to catch up over a cuppa with you and your little one well after discharging from our care.

Choosing to have an independent midwife nurture you through pregnancy and birth is an investment; an investment in your wellbeing, your confidence, and your experience of becoming a parent. It’s a decision to consider with care, just as you would when buying a car or planning a wedding, because how you are supported through this life-changing time matters deeply, and the impact lasts far beyond the day your baby is born.

If that’s the kind of care you’re looking for, Beth and I would be honoured to support you.
